Retention

  • When your braces are removed you will receive a removable upper retainer that is called a Hawley retainer and a lower fixed retainer at no additional cost. Although, if you lose or break the originals fees may apply.
  • The lower retainer is a small wire that we glue on to the back of the lower six front teeth. We use the same glue we use on the braces so it is important that the patient checks it periodically and calls us immediately if any glue comes off. The lower retainer usually stays in until the patient has had their wisdom teeth removed and the patient is approximately 25 years of age. Some of our patients choose to not have the retainer removed.
  • The upper retainer has an acrylic palate that is custom made to fit the roof of the mouth and the teeth. It also has a wire that runs along the outside of the teeth. That wire can be adjusted to control the teeth. The retainer is made with the patient’s choice of color and can even have glitter and/or stickers inserted to make your retainer one of a kind! The upper retainer is to be worn all day and night unless you are eating or playing a sport for the first year. Then you can follow the schedule below.
